“Heave-ho!” my father called.

Finally we got Max into the boat, where he landed like a fish out of water.

Meanwhile, Branko was blowing puffs of smoke from his pipe and watching the scene calmly.

“What should we do with the drunken sailor?” Fred sang.

“I am not a drunken sailor!” Max insisted.

No, I thought. A real sailor wouldn’t fall out of a rowboat into a fishing net.

Max pulled himself onto the seat. He was a soggy mess. He pretended to be fascinated by the seagulls circling above, but I knew he was totally embarrassed.

We finished hauling the nets into the boat. I got ready to grab the fish. I knew they would be slippery and fast.

I leaned over, and that’s when I saw it.

The nets were completely empty. There wasn’t a single fish in them.

“Someone cut the nets!” Fred shouted.

He held up a length of the net. When Branko saw how it had been slashed, he slammed the oars into place and started rowing furiously back to land, muttering under his breath. I didn’t need a dictionary to figure out what he was saying.

“Who do you think did that?” my father asked Fred.

“Branko is having a war with his neighbor. This isn’t the first time someone has stolen his fish.”

“Can’t he call the police?”

“That would only make things worse. It’s not so simple here.”

Then I remembered Bobo’s story about going to prison, and I figured that Fred had a point.
